he P4W is one of the emerging research centres at The Research Institute of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB). Formally the centre was founded in 2002. Initially, it was in form of land use research group maintained by researchers at The Department of Soil Sciences and Land Resources. Later, several groups having similar interests agreed to construct a new research centre.

Currently, the centre is backed by various groups with distinct expertise including spatial analysis, community development and rural and urban planning.
